ArmInfo. Although Iran is of little importance to Armenia in terms of transit, it nonetheless plays a significant role in the import of certain goods. For example, in 2025, approximately $50 million worth of Chinese cars were imported to Armenia through Iran, according to Haykaz Fanyan, head of the ACSES analytical center.
Specifically, Fanyan notes, in 2025, Armenia's total import volume through the Meghri border crossing amounted to $13 billion, of which 11%, or $1.477 million, were imported through the Meghri checkpoint.
47% ($699 million) of goods imported through Iran are of Iranian origin, and 42% ($625 million) are of Chinese origin.
Armenia primarily imports the following Chinese-origin goods through Iran: automobiles ($50 million), tires ($20 million), cardboard boxes ($16 million), toys ($15 million), and solar panels ($14 million).
Imports from Iran to Armenia are a strategically important direction, with Iran serving as the country's third-largest trading partner. The main imports are energy (natural gas under the "gas for electricity" scheme until 2030), as well as steel, fertilizers, fruits, cement, and petrochemical products.
According to 2025 data, the trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $768.1 million (an increase of 4.2%). In 2025, Iran's share of Armenia's total foreign trade was 3.6%. Imports from Iran amounted to $690.4 million, while exports from Armenia amounted to $78 million. Data on individual products for the entire year 2025 has not been compiled, but, as a rule, more than 70% of exports are electricity.
