ArmInfo.Armenia has begun the process of acquiring design and estimate documentation for the construction of a football stadium in accordance with UEFA standards in the administrative territory of the village of Getahovit in the Ijevan community.
At a meeting on June 25, the Armenian government approved the allocation of 177.8 million drams for this purpose during the first stage. Presenting the draft government decision, RA Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan recalled that Armenia and Georgia plan to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2029. Prior to this, the football federations of the two countries submitted a joint bid to host the championship, which was approved by FIFA. One of FIFA's key requirements is the availability of Category IV stadiums. Therefore, preparatory work began last year, with activities already underway to develop a stadium reconstruction project in Vanadzor, after which construction will begin.
According to the project for the stadium in the enlarged Getahovit community, as noted by the head of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, it is planned to accommodate 10,000 spectators. The selected land plot for the stadium in Ijevan was privately owned by 20 owners (with a total area of 65,971 square meters). It was acquired by the Ijevan Municipality and transferred to the Republic of Armenia. For this purpose, 329,855,000 drams were allocated by the RA Government's decision of December 18, 2025. VenueEra Holding, a company with international experience and having designed and built similar stadiums, including the Puskas Arena in Budapest, will develop the design and estimate documentation. The company is already involved in the reconstruction of the stadium in Vanadzor. The stadiums in Getahovit and Vanadzor are scheduled to be completed by January 2029.
Considering that the design process will take six months, and the project is subject to review under both the simple urban planning framework and the comprehensive state expert review, construction work could begin in the first half of 2027 at best. According to the company's proposal, construction will last 18 months. All of this is being analyzed based on the assumption that if a tender for the project is not announced, the contract will be awarded through the "Urgent Single-Party Procurement" procedure, saving time.
