ArmInfo. The restrictions imposed in June by Rosselkhoznadzor on fish imports from Armenia will not affect the supply of this product to the Russian market and will not lead to price increases, according to the Fish Union. This was reported by INTERFAX.RU.
"The extensive diversification of external sources of trout (Armenia's main fish export to Russia), combined with the sustainable development of Russian trout farming, will ensure stable supply volumes and minimize the impact of the cessation of imports from Armenia on Russian consumers," the union stated. "Increasing trout supplies from other countries, as well as increased production from Russian trout farms, will help prevent price increases for trout."
Rosselkhoznadzor, in particular, did not rule out the possibility that products from other countries, including unfriendly ones, could be imported into Russia under the guise of Armenian trout. But as the head of the service, Sergey Dankvert, stated in April, "trout from Armenian mountain rivers cannot in any way resemble Norwegian trout."
According to the Fish Union, Armenia's share of farmed (aquaculture) trout supplies to Russia in January-May of this year was approximately 10%, compared to 7% by the end of 2025. Over the five months, 3,000 tons of trout were imported from Armenia, a 20% increase compared to the previous year.
By the end of 2025, fish supplies from Armenia accounted for 1% by weight and 2% by value of Russia's total fish and seafood imports. The main product is chilled and frozen trout.
The Fish Union also reported that Turkey, China, and Iran are among the major trout suppliers to Russia, with small volumes of frozen and chilled aquaculture trout imported from Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Georgia.
Furthermore, domestic trout farming is rapidly developing. In 2025, trout production increased by 3% to 74,000 tons. According to the results of the first quarter of 2026, the key trout-farming regions were Karelia, which increased production by 19% to 5,000 tons, and North Ossetia, which nearly doubled to 3,000 tons.
